Pune's climate is kinder to textiles than most large Indian cities — moderate hardness, a genuinely dry winter, and no coastal salt. The catch is the sharpness of the transition into the monsoon, which catches households that store fabric on the same schedule all year.

It is the right window for deep cleaning household textiles — curtains, upholstery covers, blankets, heavy cotton — because they will dry completely, which is what actually prevents mildew rather than the wash itself.
Doing the same work mid-monsoon means thick textiles sit damp for a day or more, which is precisely the condition that creates the musty odour households are trying to remove.
In the weeks before the rains, the useful sequence is: clean what will be stored, dry it fully in the last of the dry air, and only then pack it away. Anything stored while carrying residual moisture will hold that moisture for the whole season.
Cupboards against external walls are worth checking as the season turns. Condensation on the inner face of a cold external wall wets whatever is pressed against it, and that is usually the back of a stack of folded cotton.
Paithani weaving carries metallic zari through the border and pallu, and the same rules apply as for other zari textiles: no immersion, no alkaline detergent, no direct heat, and no long-term storage folded on a single fixed crease line.
Handloom cotton from the region tolerates washing far better but is loosely woven, so aggressive machine agitation distorts the weave. A gentle cycle inside a mesh bag, or hand washing, preserves the drape that makes the fabric worth owning.
