Chikankari is what makes Lucknow's fabric care distinctive. It is hand embroidery worked in fine cotton thread on lightweight cloth, and almost every common laundry habit — hot water, machine agitation, wringing, hard ironing — damages it in some way.

Machine agitation catches those raised stitches against the drum and other garments, and the shadow-work technique in particular relies on threads carried across the reverse face that snag easily.
Hand washing in cool water with a mild, low-alkaline detergent, no soaking and no wringing is the standard. Press water out between towels rather than twisting, and dry flat rather than hanging, which stretches the base cloth around the heavier embroidered areas.
Ironing directly onto chikankari flattens the raised texture that is the entire point of the craft. Iron on the reverse, at low to medium heat, over a cloth, while the garment is slightly damp.
Heavy starching stiffens the base cloth around the embroidery and makes the two components move at different rates, which stresses the anchoring stitches. Light starch or none is the safer choice.
Fine cotton stored during a humid season absorbs atmospheric moisture readily, and mould establishing itself on embroidery thread leaves marks that outlast the growth. White chikankari is especially unforgiving because any staining is fully visible.
Store clean, fully dry, wrapped in cotton rather than plastic, and refold periodically so the same fold line does not weaken. Avoid direct sunlight when airing — it yellows white cotton over time.
Can chikankari be machine washed on a delicate cycle?
Hand washing is safer. Even a delicate cycle produces enough agitation to snag raised stitches and the carried threads on the reverse of shadow work.
