Fabric Care in Delhi — Very Hard Water, Extreme Seasons and Dust

Delhi combines some of India's hardest water with a 40-degree annual temperature swing and heavy particulate air. What that means for washing, storing and cleaning clothes.

TDS 400–700 ppm

Very hard water — heavy mineral deposits on fabric

4–45°C range

Extreme seasons — winter woollens and summer cottons

High particulate air

Airborne dust settles into stored textiles

Delhi asks more of a wardrobe than most Indian cities. Water hardness is at the upper end of the national range, the year runs from near-freezing winter mornings to 45°C summer afternoons, and airborne particulate settles into fabric continuously — including into clothes hanging inside a cupboard.

Hardness at this level changes the whole wash

At the hardness typical of much of Delhi's groundwater, a significant share of every detergent dose is consumed neutralising calcium and magnesium before any cleaning happens. Whites grey, dark cotton develops a chalky cast, and towels lose absorbency because mineral deposits coat the loops.

Practical responses that work at this hardness: use the detergent dose specified for hard water rather than the standard one, prefer liquid formulations that tolerate hard water better than many powders, run an occasional empty hot cycle to descale the machine, and treat visibly stiff cotton with a plain rinse rather than more detergent.

Two wardrobes, two storage problems

Delhi households effectively run two seasonal wardrobes, and the transition is where damage occurs. Wool packed away with a season's body oils, food residue or perspiration salts is far more attractive to keratin-feeding insects than wool that was cleaned first — the pest follows the soil, not the fibre.

Summer cottons face the opposite problem: months of storage in dry heat with fine dust infiltration, which abrades fibre and leaves a grey cast that no single wash fully removes. Clean before storing, use closed but breathable containment, and shake out and air stored items once mid-season.

Particulate load and household textiles

Curtains, upholstery and bedding act as passive filters for indoor air. In a high-particulate city, that filtration is real — and it means these textiles reach a soil load that justifies cleaning far sooner than the once-a-year habit most households follow.

For homes near arterial roads or construction, curtain cleaning intervals in particular should be treated as a function of the local air, not the calendar. Vacuuming with an upholstery attachment between washes removes surface deposit before it works into the weave.

Common questions — Delhi

Why do white clothes go grey so quickly in Delhi?

Two causes combine: mineral deposits from very hard water that build a dull film on fibre, and fine airborne particulate that lodges in the weave. Neither is removed by increasing detergent alone.

Should woollens be dry cleaned before winter storage?

They should at minimum be clean before storage. Invisible soil — perspiration salts, body oils, food traces — is what attracts fabric pests, so storing an unworn-looking but unwashed garment is the higher risk.

Service guidance

Choosing a Professional Fabric Care Service in Delhi

Professional fabric care varies significantly in quality across Delhi. Before entrusting delicate or valuable garments to any service, these are the questions worth asking and the standards worth knowing.

Questions to ask before handing over garments

  • ·What solvents or chemicals do you use for dry cleaning?
  • ·Do you treat each fabric type differently, or use a standard process?
  • ·How do you handle stain pre-treatment?
  • ·What is your policy if a garment is damaged during cleaning?
  • ·Can you show me where my garments will be cleaned?

What separates a professional service from a basic one

  • ·Fabric identification before treatment — not all fabrics respond to the same process
  • ·Separate handling for delicate items: silk, wool, embroidered, and embellished garments
  • ·Solvent quality disclosure — professional services should be transparent about what they use
  • ·Garment inspection on return — check for shrinkage, colour change, and residue

Red flags when evaluating a laundry or dry cleaning service

  • ·No clear information on what cleaning process is used
  • ·Same process claimed for all fabric types regardless of care label
  • ·No intake inspection — garments accepted without noting pre-existing damage
  • ·No clear pricing before service, only after

How to compare services in Delhi

A dependable service inspects each garment on intake, records its fabric composition and care label, and chooses a cleaning method accordingly — rather than running everything through one default process. Ask how delicate, embroidered, and occasion wear are handled differently from daily cottons.
