You spend roughly a third of your life in bed, and you do not spend it alone. Every night, the human body sheds close to a gram of skin cells, and much of it settles into sheets, pillows, and mattresses. That skin is food for Dermatophagoides — the house dust mite — a microscopic arachnid that lives its entire life inside household textiles. The mite does not bite, does not spread disease, and cannot be felt. What it leaves behind, however, is one of the most common indoor allergens in the world, and Indian homes — warm, humid, and often closed against outdoor dust — provide near-ideal conditions for it.

Where Dust Mites Live and What They Eat

Dust mites are not found in dust in general; they concentrate where their food concentrates. That means the bed first — mattress, pillow, duvet, and sheets — followed by upholstered furniture, carpets, and curtains. A gram of dust from a well-used mattress can contain several hundred mites.

They absorb moisture from the air rather than drinking, which is why relative humidity is the single strongest predictor of mite population. Above roughly 60 percent relative humidity, populations grow; below 50 percent, they struggle. In coastal and monsoon-affected Indian cities, indoor humidity routinely sits in the growth range for months at a time.

The Allergen Is Not the Mite

The clinical problem is a protein — known as Der p 1 in the studied species — found in mite faecal pellets. These pellets are small enough to become airborne when a bed is disturbed, and light enough to be inhaled deep into the airways. Because mites depend on ambient humidity, keeping bedrooms below 50–55 percent relative humidity suppresses the population between washes. In Indian conditions this usually means cross-ventilation in dry months, exhaust fans in adjoining bathrooms, and dehumidification or air conditioning during the monsoon in coastal cities.
