When to replace a mattress
No amount of maintenance extends the life of a mattress indefinitely. A mattress older than 8 to 10 years, particularly one used without a protector, has accumulated biological material that cleaning cannot fully address. The foam or spring structure also degrades, reducing support.
The honest guidance is this: if a mattress is more than a decade old and no consistent protector has been used, the hygiene case for replacement is strong — regardless of whether it still feels comfortable to sleep on.
