High ambient temperatures and humidity. Indian kitchen conditions — particularly during summer and monsoon seasons — are more conducive to rapid bacterial regrowth than the temperate climates in which most of this research was conducted. Higher temperatures accelerate bacterial multiplication.
Frequency of washing. Kitchen towels in most Indian households are washed weekly or less frequently. Research suggests that daily washing, or at minimum washing every time the towel has been used in raw protein handling, is the appropriate food-safe standard.

Washing frequency: After any use involving raw meat, poultry, fish, or their juices — wash immediately. For general kitchen use without raw protein contact — wash every 1 to 2 days.
Washing temperature: The temperature required to effectively reduce bacterial contamination in kitchen linen is above 60 degrees C. Where care labels permit, washing kitchen towels at 60 degrees or higher provides genuine sanitising action. Cotton kitchen towels — the most common type in Indian households — tolerate this temperature well.
Drying: Drying kitchen towels after each use, rather than leaving them damp near the sink, dramatically reduces the rate of bacterial regrowth between washes. A hook near a window or good ventilation is sufficient. Tumble drying on a high-heat setting sanitises as effectively as a hot wash.
Separate towels for different functions: Using separate towels for hand drying and vessel drying reduces cross-contamination. This is a low-cost intervention that meaningfully reduces the risk of transferring raw-protein contamination to clean dishes.
