Water scarcity is not an abstract problem in most Indian cities. Bengaluru has made international headlines for its groundwater crisis. Chennai experienced a near-zero reservoir situation as recently as 2019. Delhi draws on an increasingly stressed Yamuna. And yet household water consumption habits, including laundry, receive relatively little attention compared to the more visible issues of agricultural or industrial use.

Laundry is not the largest household water consumer — bathing typically is. But it is significant, it is controllable, and the habits around it have changed slowly even as washing machines have become standard in urban Indian homes.

How much water laundry actually uses

The water consumption of laundry depends primarily on the type of machine used.

A standard top-load washing machine uses between 120 and 180 litres per full cycle, depending on capacity and model. A front-load washing machine, which cleans by tumbling clothes through a smaller volume of water rather than submerging them, uses between 40 and 70 litres per cycle — roughly 60% less than a top-loader for comparable load sizes.

Hand washing, counterintuitively, is not necessarily the lowest-water option. Research by the University of Bonn, cited in a 2011 study on laundry water consumption, found that hand washing uses more water per kilogram of clothing than a well-loaded front-load machine — partly because people tend to rinse multiple times when washing by hand.

For a family of four running three to four wash cycles per week with a standard top-loader, total laundry water use comes to approximately 200 to 240 litres per week — roughly 10,000 to 12,000 litres per year from laundry alone.

Three changes that reduce water use without reducing results

1. Wash full loads, not partial ones

This is the most straightforward intervention and the one with the highest impact. A washing machine uses nearly the same amount of water whether it is half full or completely full. Running a half-load uses roughly the same water per kilogram of clothing as a full load — meaning half the clothes get washed at full water cost.

The habit of running the machine whenever it has "enough" clothes for a cycle — rather than waiting for a full load — is extremely common in Indian households. Shifting to full-load washing alone reduces laundry water consumption by 30 to 40% for most households without changing anything else.

The concern most people raise: clothes pile up and you run out of something you need. The practical solution is to own enough of the essentials — school uniforms, work clothes — to bridge the gap between full loads. The number of cycles per week drops; the water per cycle stays constant; total water use falls.

2. Match the water level setting to the actual load size

Many top-load washing machines allow users to select the water level — high, medium, low — independently of the wash cycle. Most Indian households leave this set to maximum regardless of load size.

A medium load in a top-loader at the high water level uses roughly the same water as a full load at that level. Adjusting the water level to match the actual load size — something most machines allow but few users do — can reduce per-cycle water use by 20 to 40% on partial loads.

Front-load machines typically manage this automatically, adjusting water intake based on load weight. Top-loaders require manual adjustment, which is why the habit of checking the setting matters.

3. Reduce rinse cycles

The rinse cycle typically uses as much water as the wash cycle in most Indian top-load machines. Many models default to two or three rinse cycles. For standard laundry loads with appropriate detergent quantities, one rinse cycle is sufficient to remove detergent residue from cotton and synthetic fabrics.

The caveat: one rinse is adequate when the detergent quantity is correct. Excess detergent — which is the norm in most Indian households, where dosing is done by feel rather than measurement — requires more rinsing to clear residue from fabric. The relationship is circular: using the correct detergent quantity allows reducing to one rinse, which reduces water use, which also reduces energy use for heated rinse cycles.

The greywater question

Laundry greywater — the water discharged from washing machines — is not clean, but it is not heavily polluted either. In many Indian households, particularly those with gardens or plants, laundry water is collected and used for watering. This is a form of water reuse that reduces net consumption.

The considerations are: what detergent is being used, and what is being watered. Standard phosphate-containing detergents are not suitable for repeated application to soil — phosphates accumulate and can damage soil structure and contaminate groundwater over time. Phosphate-free detergents, or very dilute laundry water used occasionally, carry lower risk.

The CPCB does not currently have specific guidelines for household laundry greywater reuse, which reflects how informal this practice remains. For anyone reusing laundry water for plants, phosphate-free and surfactant-minimal detergents reduce the risk to soil health.

The detergent and water relationship

An important sustainability note that connects water use to detergent chemistry: the trend toward concentrated liquid detergents, if used correctly, reduces both detergent use and water burden from excessive sudsing.

Concentrated detergents require smaller doses per wash. Smaller doses mean less surfactant in the wash water and less effort needed to rinse it out. The water efficiency gain is real but only materialises when the concentrated formula is used at the correct dose — which the packaging specifies. Using a concentrated detergent at the same volume as a regular detergent produces excess sudsing that requires additional rinsing and negates the efficiency gain entirely.

A note on cold water washing

Hot water washing uses energy, not just water. Heating water for laundry accounts for a substantial share of a washing machine's energy consumption — estimates from the US Department of Energy suggest 75 to 90% of washing machine energy goes to water heating, not the motor.

Most Indian washing machines do not have internal heaters — water temperature depends on the supply temperature. In this context, the energy argument for cold-water washing that applies strongly in colder climates is less directly relevant. However, as geysers and hot water lines connected to washing machines become more common in urban Indian homes, the energy dimension of wash temperature is worth tracking.
