Indian washing machines usually offer a temperature dial that never moves. Households wash everything on one setting, often whatever the tap supplies, and the results are acceptable until a woollen sweater comes out two sizes smaller or a white shirt keeps a brown mark that will not shift. Temperature is the least visible wash variable and one of the few that can cause damage no rewash will reverse.
What temperature actually changes
Raising water temperature speeds up chemical reactions, which helps oily and greasy soil dissolve and disperse. That is the benefit. Three costs come with it.
- Dye migration increases, so colours bleed and fade faster
- Protein coagulates, which sets blood, milk, egg and sweat stains into the fibre
- Fibres relax and, in wool and some cottons, shrink dimensionally in ways that cannot be reversed
Enzyme detergents shift the balance. Protease and lipase do at 30 to 40°C much of what heat used to be needed for, which is why cold and warm washing now performs closer to hot washing than it did a generation ago.

Fabric by fabric
Cotton and linen
Sturdy and heat tolerant. Whites and heavily soiled cottons can take 60°C, which is also the temperature widely cited for reducing dust mite allergens in bedding. Coloured cotton does better at 30 to 40°C to limit dye loss. Pre-shrunk cotton is stable; unshrunk handloom often is not.
Silk, including sarees and dupattas
Cold water only, 30°C at most, with a detergent formulated for delicates. Silk is a protein fibre, so heat both weakens the filament and dulls the sheen. Zari work adds a metallic thread that reacts badly to heat and agitation together, and heavily worked pieces belong with a professional.
Wool and pashmina
Cold, gentle, minimal agitation. Wool shrinks through felting, where scales on the fibre surface interlock under heat and movement. Once felted, the change is permanent.
Polyester, nylon and blends
30 to 40°C. Synthetics hold oily soil and body odour more stubbornly than cotton, so a warm wash helps, but temperatures above roughly 50°C encourage permanent creasing and can distort the fabric.
Elastane blends and activewear
Cold. Elastane loses recovery with repeated heat exposure, which is why gym leggings go slack at the knees long before the fabric wears through.
When higher temperature is worth it
There are situations where heat is the point rather than a risk.
- Bedding and pillow covers in allergy-affected households, where 60°C is the commonly cited threshold for reducing mite allergen load
- Kitchen linen and cleaning cloths, where hygiene rather than appearance is the objective
- Illness in the household, where WHO domestic hygiene guidance supports hotter washing of directly contaminated laundry
- Heavy oil and grease on work clothes, which cold water struggles to lift
Outside these cases, the energy cost is real. Heating water is the largest share of a washing machine's electricity use, so the default should be low and the exceptions deliberate.
Sequencing mixed loads
A load can only run at one temperature, which means sorting decides what is possible. Group by the lowest tolerance in the pile rather than the average.
Where a garment carries both a protein stain and general soil, treat the stain in cold water first, confirm it has cleared, then wash the item at whatever temperature the fabric allows. Reversing that order sets the mark for good.
