But when dry cleaning goes wrong — and it does — the damage can be significant and irreversible. A silk saree that loses its lustre. A sherwani that returns with a new colour variation where a stain was treated. A structured jacket that emerges slightly distorted. Why Dry Cleaning Damage Occurs

  1. Smell the garment. A strong chemical odour indicates insufficient drying. Ask the facility to dry it further before you accept it.

If you identify damage at the counter: Tell the dry cleaner immediately, in the shop, before taking the garment. This establishes the timing of the complaint clearly. Ask to speak to the manager or owner. Document the damage with photographs on your phone before leaving the premises.

What "Intake Inspection" Should Happen — and Often Does Not

At reputable dry cleaning facilities, an intake inspection process accompanies every garment received. The garment is examined before cleaning: existing stains are noted, existing damage is recorded, embellishments are assessed, and the fabric type is identified. This documentation protects both the consumer and the dry cleaner.

In many Indian dry cleaning establishments — particularly smaller neighbourhood operations — this intake process is cursory or absent. Garments are accepted without a condition record, making it difficult later to distinguish pre-existing damage from cleaning damage.
