What Indian Households Can Do
The scale of the microplastic problem is systemic — it requires industrial-level responses including better washing machine filtration, textile manufacturing standards, and wastewater treatment infrastructure. Individual action cannot solve a systemic problem. However, individual choices can meaningfully reduce the volume of fibres entering the water system from a specific household.
Use a microplastic filter bag or ball

In India specifically, the gaps in sewage treatment infrastructure mean that a significant proportion of household wastewater reaches water bodies without meaningful treatment regardless of individual laundry choices. Advocacy for better treatment infrastructure and for mandatory washing machine filtration standards — as has been proposed in several European jurisdictions — addresses the problem at the scale where it can be meaningfully resolved.
